Are you Among These 4 People Who Shouldn’t Intermittent Fast?

You probably may have heard all the hype about how intermittent fasting helps with weight loss and other things. And you might ask yourself; is intermittent fasting right for me?

No matter how you look at it, intermittent fasting is not for everyone. There are categories of people who shouldn’t intermittent fast. Not that they don’t have the capabilities to fast. But it’s because fasting would cause more harm than good to them. It could even be fatal.

Among those people are:

  1. Pregnant women and lactating mothers
  2. People who are frail
  3. People who have any kind of diatary disease or a history of it
  4. Those who have serious diabetes

Let’s discuss why each of these groups shouldn’t even think about intermittent fasting. I’ll start with the first one, then continue in that order.

I want you to keep in mind that I’m not a doctor, and hence I don’t prescribe anything. Use your discresion or your doctor’s advice. That said, let’s start wit the first one.

Pregnant women shouldn’t intermittent fast

This may go without saying, but I’ll like to touch on it a bit.

When you’re pregnant, you need to eat a lot of rich foods to help the proper development of the baby. That isn’t the time to think about weight loss or anything similar.

It’s already complicated to be pregnant. You don’t want to make things worse for yourself and the baby. If at all, wait till you wean the baby, then you can fast as much as you want.

But don’t take my word for it. Like I said, I’m not a doctor. So I can only give my opinion. Do what your doctor thinks it’s best for you.

Alright… Over to the next category of people who shouldn’t fast.

People who are frail

The word frail is used to describe people who are slow, weak, or unable to do things like any other person. They easily get exhausted, find it difficult to walk fast or long-distance, or have low physical activity.

With such conditions, it wouldn’t be a great idea to intermittent fast.

Already, it is know that fasting drains some energy from the body. What do you think would happen when you’re already weak, and then you intermittent fast on top?

You’ll cause more harm than good to your body.

Don’t fast if you have any dietary disease

Dietary diseases are psychological diseases that make people obsessed with food. It’s either they don’t want to eat anything because they fear they’ll gain weight, or that they can’t stop eating even when they’re full.

Common examples include anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, pica, and so on.

No matter the kind of dietary disease that you may have now or have had in the past, it’ll be such a bad idea to intermittent fast.

The reason is simple.

Intermittent fasting would rekindle those feeding tendencies. And when care is not taken, it can be life-threatening.

That’s why you shouldn’t risk your life by bringing back those eating disorders with intermittent fasting

Stay clear of fasting if you have difficulty controling your diabetes

Intermittent fasting indeed helps to control blood sugar. However, if your diabetes is serious, then you need to think about fasting again.

This is especially true if you have type 1 diabetes. With type one diabetes, your pancreas produces little to no insulin. When you fast on top, your blood sugar level can become dangerously low.

Another thing to consider. When your diabetes is serious, your dear doctor would prescribe some drugs to help stabilize your body. Some of these drugs require you to eat at certain intervals.

It goes without saying that fasting while you’re in this condition is not going to help your situation.

That’s why it is always recommended that before you intermittent fast, you need to have a conversation with your doctor.

These awesome specialists would help you know if it’s safe for you to fast or not.

Final thoughts

True, intermittent fasting helps with weight loss, blood sugar control, blood pressure, and what have you.

But before you ever decide to intermittent fast, speak with your doctor first to know if it’s safe for you or not. That way, you’ll avoid the risk of going to the emergency room.
